Honest Family Review of MSC World America: What We Loved and What Fell Short

I had my heart set on trying out MSC’s newest ship, World America. So I popped my family on a flight from NYC to Miami and spent Fourth of July week making the new ship our new home, enjoying stops in Costa Maya, Isla de Rotan, Cozumel, and Ocean Cay. Here’s our honest take on the ship, excursions, and overall experience aboard MSC World America.

Background: Why We Chose MSC World America

  • This was our second MSC cruise this year. We took MSC Meraviglia over Thanksgiving last year (which leaves out of NYC), so we’ve been to their private island Ocean Cay before.
  • My kids are ages 6 and 2 so our activities are semi limited, meaning the excursion options for us are few, we do the 5pm dinner and 7:30/8pm shows, and are often nap trapped.
  • I was 16 weeks pregnant this trip so we didn’t drink. I sure missed the 10-15 drinks per day like a good sailor enjoys.
  • I get the MSC cruises for semi-free for having status at a local casino, Ocean Casino in Atlantic City, which I got through the merry-go-round for being a Founders Club member. I comes out to basically half price after you factor in the cost for adding my kids, upgrading to a balcony room, and the upcharge for World America. Not complaining… except for the fact that MSC and Ocean Casino discontinued their partnership this year, booo!

The Pros: What We Loved About MSC World America

  • Brand New Ship Vibes: The ship is a few months old, so it felt pristine. I especially liked the outdoor spaces to hang out, like The Harbour on floor 20 and the Lanai on floor 8
  • More complimentary dining options than ever: 2 buffets (floor 18 and 19), pizza and burgers on floor 6, snacks at The Harbour on floor 20, and a sit down breakfast in Hexagon on floor 6.
  • Ideal room location: I asked for a high floor so I would have a nice view and was put on 15, and to be close to the buffets and pools but quiet. I could just walk the two floors up to the pools and buffet which was awesome, and the dining rooms on floor 5 and 6 were right by the elevators so I didn’t have to walk from end to end often.
  • Not overcrowded: I’m sure the ship was full being 4th of July week, but it didn’t feel too crowded. Maybe I was just used to there never being seats at the pool or I got better about booking shows or dinner reservations when I arrived, but I didn’t feel like I was waiting in long lines the whole time which was nice and unexpected.
  • Friendly crew: The staff, per usual, was exceptional. We always enjoy getting to know our waiters and housekeeping team, and they were all very hard working, fast, and accommodating.

The Cons: What Didn’t Work So Well

  • Surprise Charges: I felt slightly nickel-and-dimed, with bumper cars costing an extra $7, ice cream for $4.50 by the pool, extra cost for the Cliffhanger swing, and over $100 of service fees per person once I’m on the ship (read ~$500 for my family of 4. Can’t you just build that into the cost of what I initially paid?!)
  • Complicated Kids Club Hours: Kids clubs hours were hard to figure out and my husband and I to had to get really creative and speedy with pulling off a specialty dinner for us two. The baby club has different hours than the other kids clubs, and on days at sea it ends at 7 or 8pm. We had booked a 8:15 dinner reservation but were able to move it to the following night at 6:30 when kids club would close at 8pm.
  • Cancelled Excursions: We had originally booked an excursion to a lagoon in Costa Maya, but it was cancelled once we were on the ship due to a minimum age restriction of 5. It seems odd that we would even be able to book it for our 2-year-old if it wasn’t available to him. This threw off everything I had planned since I didn’t want to do multiple days of Mayan ruins, and most of the other interesting excursions were full by the time we found out ours was cancelled.

Port Reviews from Our MSC World America Itinerary

Costa Maya, Mexico: Beach Club Day

Because our excursion for this day was cancelled, we decided to do a beach day on our own.

  • We accepted a taxi and beach club from the first guy that approached us as we walked out of the port. We paid him $40 ($20 each for me and my husband, kids were free) for access to the club, a table in the sand where we could eat lunch, and 4 lounge chairs on the beach. He also said the taxi to the beach would be $5 each way, which we learned after the taxi ride was actually $5 per person, so $20 each way.
  • The beach had a lot of seaweed, and the water was a weird yellow color. I think they have carpet or something under the sand which is where the color comes from.
  • The guy who sold us the beach club said there would be kayaks and stuff included, so it was a little confusing but I think there were two communal stand up paddle boards and my daughter insisted and getting paddled around for a bit so it wasn’t an issue. I did hear who I think was an aggressive kayak vendor screaming at a family over the confusion that the man thought he already paid for kayaks. The guy was telling him to shut up over and over again and how he accommodated the guys family. It was one of the most inappropriate, outrageous ways I have ever seen a vendor behave, but I was at a distance so who knows the full story. Not a good look for people trying to enjoy their beach day though.
  • The beach club area was very crowded. Everyone was packed into a very small area elbow to elbow doing the same thing with a few shops and restaurants.
  • I didn’t realize the main excursion in Costa Maya is the Aztec ruins, Chacchoben, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. I had my heart set on doing Tulum and I didn’t want to overdo the Mayan ruins vibe, so I’m not sure if I would have done anything differently had I have known my original excursion would be cancelled.

It wasn’t the best beach day, but I wasn’t sure what else to do since our excursion options were limited by age restrictions and last minute availability.

Isla de Roatán, Honduras: Stunning But Rushed

Roatán was my favorite stop. The beach was so pretty, and I wish I had more time to enjoy it.

  • We took a 3.5 hour excursion that went to the Cameo factory, which is a local artist who drew on shells, then the West End village where we went to a restaurant, a chocolate making factory, and had ~20 minutes to walk around the town, which is when we saw the beach.
  • The main event of the excursion was a submarine tour where we saw the reef and fish, which was very cool to learn about and kid-friendly.

I would have preferred a submarine and beach tour and skipped the Cameo stop, restaurant, and chocolate factory so we had more time at the beach, but it seems like they want to support local businesses. We were bummed we didn’t get to spend more time at the beach because it seemed really beautiful with clear, warm water.

Cozumel & Tulum: Long Day, Big Payoff

For our stop in Cozumel, we took the full day visiting a bucket list item: the Tulum ruins.

  • We left the ship at 9am to take a ferry to Playa del Carmen, then an hour bus ride to Tulum.
  • We got an hour tour from our guide of the ruins, then had ~3 hours to explore on our own and eat lunch.
  • Then we drove the hour back to the port, and walked around 5th Avenue for an hour, before getting back on the ferry for an hour to the island of Cozumel and getting back on the ship around 6:30pm.

If you’re considering going to Tulum from Cozumel, know it’s a long but rewarding day trip. It was very pretty right on the coast, and I loved learning about the ancient Mayan culture and how prevalent it still is to the Riviera Maya.

Ocean Cay, Bahamas: A Relaxing Finale

We had been to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, about 7 months prior, so it was nice to be back.

  • If feels somewhat like Disneyland meets the Caribbean, with everything just as you would expect and want, meaning crystal clear water, several beach options, a free buffet and tram system, lounge chairs, and plenty to things rent like rafts, umbrellas, snorkel gear, kayaks, and jet skis.

A perfect final day.

Final Thoughts: Is MSC World America Good for Families?

Yes – with caveats. If you’re looking for a modern, clean, family-friendly ship with great food variety, good entertainment, and unique ports of call, MSC World America delivers. All in all, we had a memorable week. We only had two sea days, so we weren’t too bored. My kids had fun on the kids waterslide, but we didn’t make it down the grown up waterslides. The jaw drop slide and cliffhanger swing were fun and unique as well! I liked the adult pool in the back of the boat, but the two pools there are a little small and crowded. Our room was comfortable, and our kids enjoyed the bunk beds, as well as a balcony to enjoy the weather and views. It definitely felt like we got the full vacation experience!

NYC is packed with unforgettable sightseeing experiences for every kind of traveler — from foodies and history buffs to architecture lovers and solo explorers.

Whether you’re walking through iconic neighborhoods or cruising past the Statue of Liberty, these top New York City tours are sure to elevate your trip. Here’s a breakdown of six unforgettable ways to explore NYC.

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Tour

When it comes to must-do NYC tours, visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is at the top of the list. These iconic landmarks are deeply tied to American history and the immigrant experience. I actually love Ellis Island more than the Statue of Liberty, and can spend hours sitting in the pews where travelers waited, and hearing the stories about people who came through the building.

Why it’s worth it:

  • Visit Liberty Island for unbeatable views of the statue
  • Tour Ellis Island’s Immigration Museum and sit where early immigrants once waited
  • Climb up to the pedestal or crown for panoramic city views (book crown tickets early!)

Pro Tip: Book combo tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist season.

Food Tours in NYC: Eat Your Way Through the City

I love doing food tours when I visit new cities because I get to meet new friends, explore new sites, and take care of a meal at the same time. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, food tours combine local culture with unforgettable bites. Bonus: These are a great way to meet people if you’re visiting NYC alone.

Popular NYC food tours include:

  • Chinatown & Little Italy culinary tours
  • Pizza and donut walks
  • Speakeasy cocktail tours
  • Immigrant food heritage walks

NYC Boat Tours & Ferry Rides

Since Manhattan is an island, some of the best views of the city come from the water. Whether you’re on a tight budget or planning a romantic night out, boat tours in NYC offer something for everyone.

  • The Staten Island Ferry is free and goes right by the Statue of Liberty. There isn’t a ton to do on Staten Island so you can just take the boat right back to Manhattan, but the close up view of the Statue of Liberty is unmatched, as is the price. Tip: plan to go at sunset!
  • There are dinner or happy hour cruises that take a variety of routes. Some great routes go by the Statue of Liberty, or you can circumnavigate the whole island!
  • I also love taking the NYC Ferry to Brooklyn to visit Dumbo, Domino Park, or Rockaway Beach for a flat rate of $4.50 one way.

Walking Tours in New York City

Get your steps in while diving deep into NYC’s neighborhoods, landmarks, and hidden gems. Walking tours are a fantastic way to discover local history, architecture, and culture with an expert guide.

Popular walking tours in NYC:

  • Central Park is huge, beautiful, and has so much to see! You can easily spend a few hours here, but if you’re not very familiar with it then it might be hard to find the best spots or know what to look for. A guided tour is a great way to learn some history and see the most important parts, while making some friends along the way.
  • Get a behind the scenes tour of famous landmarks like Grand Central Station, the site of the Twin Towers and the memorials that have been established since 9/11, or the Catacombs at St. Patrick’s Cathedral!
  • Get a deep dive into local life and history in different neighborhoods like Chinatown, Little Italy, or Greenwich Village.

NYC Observation Decks: The Best City Views

Get a bird’s eye view of New York City from some of the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere. Each skyscraper offers a unique angle and experience. If you can, try to go on a clear day to get the best views.

Best observation decks in NYC:

  • I love One World Trade because you can see all of Manhattan in one glance. If you have some time, it can be fun to have a snack or drink at the restaurant on the top.
  • The Empire State Building is well known and you can channel your best King Kong. Because it’s in the middle of the city, you can catch views of the whole city as you walk around the top.
  • There are many other skyscrapers that offer amazing views and experiences such as Summit, The Edge, and Top of the Rock.

What To Eat and Drink on MSC Meraviglia: A Family-Friendly Dining Guide from NYC to the Bahamas

My family had a great time on a 7-night MSC cruise aboard MSC Meraviglia! The cruise left from New York City on a Sunday and stopped in Florida, the Bahamas, and MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay. The cruise was an easy family getaway from NYC, a wonderful escape from the cold weather, and provided everything our family could need for the week! We went on our cruise over Thanksgiving week, which also happened to be over my son’s 2nd birthday. The ship was at maximum capacity, with about 5,400 passengers on board and 2,000 staff. Because it was over Thanksgiving, there was an abnormally high amount of kids and teenagers on the ship, which was great for me because I didn’t worry about bothering anyone with my two small kids.

Cruising with Kids: A Stress-Free Family Experience

The best thing about this cruise for our family was it was very kid friendly. They had a free kids club, even for babies, that we used almost every day for our 2-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl. Our daughter had a night out that was a magic show in the theater, and I think she loved getting some independence away from mom and dad! We spent the sunny warm days at the pool or off the ship, and spent the cold days at sea at the indoor pool. As with many vacations, a lot of the time was spent eating, thinking about eating, or planning your next meal. Luckily, the food on MSC cruises was delicious and plentiful, with an emphasis on an accessible variety of options! From frozen yogurt with sprinkles to late night pizza in the buffet, we loved the food and drinks on our cruise to the Bahamas on MSC Meraviglia! Between specialty restaurants for an extra fee, to the included buffets and sit down restaurants, it can take some trial and error to find what works best for your family. Here is a break down of what my family enjoyed eating and drinking on our 7-day cruise on MSC Meragivlia:

Breakfast on MSC Meraviglia

For the first few days, we had breakfast in the buffet. This was crowded and fine, with a big variety. We preferred to eat breakfast in the sit down restaurant, L’Olivo D’Oro, and enjoyed almost everything on the menu! We also had free continental breakfast room service included with our room, which we used for the first day and enjoyed, but our kids need to eat more anyway so it made more sense for us to spend more time getting more food out.

Lunch Options for Families

The best part about lunch is they serve many great options like pizza, chicken tenders, and french fries at a poolside buffet station. It was super flexible, which helped with nap schedules and pool breaks.

On the day we stopped at Ocean Cay, they set up a very nice lunch buffet at the outdoor onsite pavilion, so we easily grabbed plates and beers and ate with our toes in the sand.

Another option for lunch is the buffet where they also serve breakfast and dinner. However, lunch doesn’t start until noon, which is unfortunately baby’s nap time. I would assume lunch should start at least by 11:30am, so that was a surprise and challenge for us to wait until noon for lunch to start.

Dinner: Main Dining Rooms and Flexibility

I don’t have a ton of experience on cruises, so I really enjoyed how there was a designated table and time for my family to have a sit down dinner every night. You are assigned to one of a few different restaurants, including Waves and Panorama, and seating times vary between 5pm – 9pm. It is very flexible so you can ask to be formally moved to a different time recurring, or wait in a standby line and they seat everyone after the reservations have gone in. This meant that if we were out on a day adventure exploring at a stop, we didn’t have to rush back to our designated dinner time. We could easily wait for the closest time that worked for us, no problem. We moved our designated time to 5:30pm for our small kids, and got to know our waiters very well, who were a married couple from the Philippines. Our dinners with them were one of the highlights of our trip!

Specialty Dining (Extra Cost, Totally Worth It)

There are also five specialty restaurants if you want to pay an extra fee. We went to the taco restaurant on Thanksgiving, and enjoyed the teppanyaki restaurant, which was fun, interactive, and a hit with our kids. There is also a steak house, sushi restaurant, and seafood restaurant, but I was intimidated by those for my kids, plus there is already a great diner included in the cruise that we loved! If you want to go to a specialty restaurant, make a reservation at least 2-3 days in advance. If you don’t see times on the app, ask them in person and maybe you can go back the following day.

Drinks: Packages, Cocktails & Where to Sip

We purchased two easy plus packages before our trip, but it looks like MSC has discontinued this drink package. This included drinks up to $10, so I was excited for the frozen strawberry daiquiris, margaritas, Negronis, vodka or tequila with soda, Prosecco, wine, and variety of beer. The cheaper more basic drink package only included Heineken as the beer. Kettle One was my liquor of choice for the week, including salty dirty martinis. My drink package also included a bloody mary bar at the breakfast buffet, or mimosas in the sit down breakfast restaurant. I enjoyed wine at the dinner restaurants, and Irish Coffee for an energy boost. I paid a $4 upcharge once for an espresso martini which was very yummy. I also paid extra for sake at the teppan restaurant. The package was such a deal that MSC has discontinued it, and I think they now only offer one drink package instead of tiers.

We also bought the minors package for our 5 year old daughter, so we could freely order her juice and water bottles. Our two-year-old didn’t need a drink package.

My favorite place to hang out with my husband and grab a drink was the Sky Lounge! It was conveniently located right next to the kids club on the 18th floor, so we could easily drop our kids off and pop over to grab a Prosecco and watch the sunset. I enjoyed the live jazz, as well as watching the nightly dance parties happening on the pool deck below.

Celebrating a Birthday at Sea

Since our son turned 2 during the cruise, we pre-ordered a birthday cake through MSC. The staff brought balloons, sang, and made it a fun, festive memory.

Cruise Dining Tips for Families

  • Try sit-down breakfast to avoid buffet chaos
  • Bring snacks for young kids – lunch starts late
  • Specialty dining is great, but the included meals are solid
  • Flexible dinner times help accommodate naps and excursions
  • The drink package is worth it if you enjoy daily cocktails or specialty drinks
  • The kids club gives you free time to enjoy a drink or quiet meal

Final Thoughts: A Foodie-Friendly Family Cruise

We loved our 7-night cruise on MSC Meraviglia! The highlights of our trip were the waterslides, kids club, and the married couple who were our waiters for our sit down dinner every night. It was fun to people watch and see many family reunions enjoying a get together. I enjoyed strolling under the sky dome with my family, with salty hair and sandy bathing suits, enjoying trivia and some ice cream.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Hotel Review: A Luxurious Babymoon in the Bahamas

When I was pregnant with my first child in 2019, I decided to go to the Bahamas for my babymoon. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar resort in Nassau, and had an amazing time.

Why We Chose the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar for Our Babymoon

  • Location: Just 5 miles from downtown Nassau
  • Zika-Free Destination: A major plus for pregnant travelers in 2019
  • Vibe: A calm, upscale environment with other babymooning couples. The resort seemed full of pregnant ladies waddling around and their husbands who were excited for the opportunity to have a whiskey and cigar.

Despite my concerns about being too remote, the resort’s central location made it easy to enjoy the on-site amenities while still being close enough to explore the island. Plus, the short direct flight from NYC to Nassau made the trip incredibly convenient.

Enjoying the Pools and Beach at Baha Mar

The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar boasts multiple beautiful pools, plus a white-sand beach with calm turquoise waters – ideal for lounging or floating on a raft. This was the highlight of our stay: lazy afternoons alternating between the pools and the ocean with plenty of space to relax.

Food & Dining at Baha Mar

While the property isn’t all-inclusive, the food quality makes it worth every penny. We enjoyed:

  • Lunch: Sandwiches on breezy patios
  • Dinner: Elegant dishes like steak and pasta
  • Atmosphere: Upscale, yet not overly formal. It was a very luxurious place to rest and treat myself to the best of the best.

👉 Pro Tip: Make dinner reservations in advance (especially during peak seasons) to avoid long waits.

Hotel Rooms: Spacious & Stylish

Our room was surprisingly large, especially for a standard category. Though we were on the ground floor, we still had a view of the ocean from our private patio. The space felt modern, bright, and very clean. Plus, I’m always a fan of sleek marble floors and spa-style bathrooms.

Exploring Downtown Nassau

While most of our time was spent enjoying the resort, we ventured off property one day and it was totally worth it. Highlights of downtown Nassau include:

It’s easy to walk or take a cab from the resort, and it adds cultural richness to your trip.

Final Thoughts: Is Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Worth It?

Absolutely. The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar is clean, upscale, and family-friendly, without being overrun with noise or crowds. While it’s not all-inclusive, the high quality of food, service, and amenities more than make up for it. From the sprawling pools and private beach to the spacious rooms and excellent location, it was a perfect babymoon spot, and a great option for anyone looking for a luxury Bahamas vacation.

Quick Tips for Booking Your Baha Mar Stay

  • Book Early: Especially during holidays or babymoon season
  • Make Dinner Reservations: To avoid crowds
  • Plan One Day Off-Property: Downtown Nassau is close and worth exploring
  • Pregnant Travelers: Ask your OB/GYN and confirm current Zika status
  • Best For: Couples, babymoons, luxury family vacations

3 Beautiful All-Inclusive Resorts in Mexico

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps support my site. Thank you!

Looking for the best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico that offer great food, amazing amenities, and stunning scenery? As someone who grew up in Southern California and frequently visited Mexico, I’ve experienced both the good and not-so-good when it comes to all-inclusive properties. The key to a great experience? Choosing the right resort – one where the food is worth savoring, the drinks are actually good, and you’re not hit with extra costs for the basics.

To save you the trial and error, here are three of my favorite all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, each offering something unique whether you’re surfing with kids, escaping for a babymoon, or indulging in a romantic getaway.

Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa (Near Puerto Vallarta)

Best For: Families, surfers, and nature lovers

Located just outside Puerto Vallarta, Grand Palladium Vallarta is a family-friendly, beachfront resort that’s become one of my favorite places to stay, especially with kids. We originally discovered it while searching for surf spots, and it quickly became a go-to destination thanks to its beginner-friendly surf break, kid-approved amenities, and lush tropical setting.

I have stayed in the family portion of the hotel with access to a secluded pool and restaurant, as well as the regular part of the resort. This hotel is very kid friendly with a few small waterslides, some onsite animals, infinity pools, and alcohol is included. Besides from being really easy to lug my kids around, my favorite thing about this hotel is the beach it is on. Often times I do not spend much time at the beach, but this hotel has a beach that is secluded and very easy to go back and forth from the main hotel.

Highlights:

  • Incredible surf right outside the resort 🏄‍♀️
  • Separate family area with secluded pool & dining
  • Onsite animals: monkeys, ostriches, and peacocks 🦚
  • Three pools, five restaurants, spa, and swim-up bars
  • Easy beach access and tons of shaded seating
  • Complimentary kayaks and snorkeling

We spent 10 days here for my birthday and never felt the need to leave the property. But if you do want to explore, Sayulita is a charming surf town nearby and well worth the trip.

Secrets The Vine (Cancun)

Best For: Babymoons, romantic getaways, and adult-only luxury

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape with high-end food and no kids in sight, Secrets The Vine Cancun is a dream. I chose this adults-only, all-inclusive resort for my second babymoon and it exceeded every expectation.

Highlights:

  • Ocean and bay views from nearly every room 🌅
  • Access to private pools for upgraded rooms
  • Seven restaurants, three pools, many bars and lounges to relax and listen to live music, and spa
  • Premium food & drink, including steak, seafood & room service
  • Beachfront location with turquoise Caribbean waters

Whether you’re enjoying a quiet breakfast or lounging at the pool with mocktails or cocktails, this resort combines luxury and relaxation in one unforgettable experience.

Riu Palace (Cabo San Lucas)

Best For: Affordable luxury, couples, and first-time all-inclusive travelers

Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas is a classic all-inclusive in Baja California, just a short flight from many U.S. cities. It holds a special place in my heart as my first vacation with my husband, and while I don’t have many pictures left from that trip, the memories are vivid.

Highlights:

  • Gorgeous colonial-style architecture 🏰
  • Two large pools, swim-up bars, and ocean views
  • All rooms include in-room alcohol dispensers 🍹
  • Several onsite restaurants, including Japanese cuisine and delicious Mexican food at the buffet
  • Easy access to downtown Cabo and marina

Swimming at the beach is limited due to waves, but the pools and nearby harbor walks more than make up for it.

Final Thoughts: Picking the Right All-Inclusive Resort in Mexico

Whether you’re looking for surfing with kids, a babymoon escape, or a romantic adults-only retreat, there’s an all-inclusive resort in Mexico perfect for you. Just be sure to:

  • Read reviews before booking (quality varies a lot!)
  • Check the restaurant options and make reservations in advance
  • Look for properties that match your vibe – family-friendly, romantic, adventurous, etc.

And if you love Mexican food, sunny beaches, and sipping cocktails poolside, you’re already halfway to the perfect vacation.

7 Fun & Unique Ways To Celebrate Your Birthday in New York City

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps support my site. Thank you!

Looking for exciting and unforgettable ways to celebrate your birthday in NYC? Whether you’re turning 25 or 45, New York City offers something for everyone, from relaxing spa days to adventurous water activities. As someone who takes birthdays very seriously (we’re talking birthday month levels of celebration), I’ve put together this list based on my own favorite experiences in and around the city.

If you want your next birthday to feel like a day of royalty, here are 7 amazing ways to celebrate your birthday in New York City:

Celebrate at a New York Yankees Game

A classic birthday option for sports fans: cheering on the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. If your birthday falls during baseball season, check the schedule and plan ahead for a fun afternoon or evening game. Between the home runs, cold beers, and wide selection of stadium snacks, it’s a festive and energetic way to mark your special day.

Pro Tip: Upgrade to premium seats or book a group package for the full birthday experience.

Hop On a Double-Decker Big Bus Tour

Touring NYC on an open-top bus is a surprisingly relaxing and scenic way to spend your birthday, especially if you want to sit back and enjoy the city’s famous sights without walking for miles. Companies like Big Bus Tours and TopView NYC offer various routes around Manhattan and Brooklyn. I have also booked these tours in a foreign country to take up a few hours before I need to be at the airport for a flight, or when I land in a port and need to get somewhere more trafficked instead of taking a taxi. It’s also a great idea for guests visiting from out of town!

Enjoy a Luxury Spa Day

Treat yourself to a spa day in NYC and indulge in massages, saunas, hot tubs, and more. Some top spa experiences include:

  • SoJo Spa Club (Edgewater, NJ): Multiple pools, saunas, and skyline views
  • Great Jones Spa (Manhattan): Known for its water lounge and relaxing vibe
  • QC NY Spa (Governors Island): A newer favorite with stunning harbor views
  • Mario Badescu Spa: Classic facials, but no full spa amenities

A spa birthday is perfect for total relaxation – and being pampered like the queen or king you are.

Go River Tubing in Pennsylvania

Looking for a unique NYC birthday day trip? Head to Pennsylvania for a tubing adventure. Many local tour companies offer full-day tubing trips from New York City, complete with transportation, BBQ lunch, and scenic river floats. It’s an active, social, and off-the-beaten-path way to celebrate, great for groups and outdoor lovers.

Jet Ski on the Hudson River

Want a true bucket-list birthday? Book a jet ski tour on the Hudson River and ride past the Statue of Liberty and NYC skyline. It’s thrilling, unforgettable, and one of the most unique ways to spend your birthday in the city.

Companies to try: Sea the City, Rockaway Jet Ski

Take a NYC Boat Cruise or Ferry Ride

There’s something magical about being on the water for your birthday. NYC offers tons of boat cruises and sailboat charters, from dinner cruises to champagne happy hours. A few popular options include:

Whether you’re partying or relaxing, the views of Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, and Lady Liberty are unbeatable.

Take a Birthday Getaway to The Hamptons or Atlantic City

Sometimes, the best way to celebrate your birthday is to leave the city entirely. If you’re based in NYC, Montauk and Atlantic City are two easy and fun birthday getaways:

  • Montauk: Stay at Ocean Surf Resort (beachfront + walkable) or splurge at Gurney’s (year-round oceanfront pool + spa)
  • Atlantic City: I recommend Ocean Casino Resort for modern rooms, ocean views, and a great mix of nightlife and relaxation

A weekend away can give you the space to reflect, recharge, and party on your own terms.

Final Thoughts: Birthday Ideas in New York City

Whether you’re into sports, spas, scenic cruises, or spontaneous day trips, New York City has endless birthday celebration options. The key is to plan ahead, treat yourself, and choose something that feels special to YOU.

Whether you’re planning a beach vacation, a cultural getaway, or a foodie road trip, Spain has something for every type of traveler. You can even combine a trip to Spain with a visit to nearby Portugal or Paris if you have a little more time.

On my multiple trips to Spain, including studying abroad in the north and working in the south, I’ve fallen in love with many of its cities. Here’s my personal list of the best cities to visit in Spain, each with its own unique charm and must-see attractions.

San Sebastián– Best for Beaches and Basque Cuisine

I have said on more than one occasion that if I disappear off the grid, I have gone to San Sebastián. Located in the Basque Country, this coastal gem offers stunning beaches, a world-renowned culinary scene, and a walkable city center packed with lively bars and restaurants.

Nestled beneath Monte Urgull, San Sebastián feels like a laid-back version of Southern California, but with way better pintxos (Basque-style tapas). Spend your days soaking up the sun, hiking the surrounding hills, or wine tasting nearby. It’s a smaller city, so it’s great to pair with visits to Bilbao or Rioja wine country.

Top Things to Do in San Sebastián:

  • Relax on La Concha Beach
  • Explore the Parte Vieja (Old Town) for pintxos
  • Hike Monte Urgull or Monte Igueldo
  • Day trip to Getaria or Hondarribia

Barcelona – Best for Architecture, Food & City Vibes

Who doesn’t love every corner of Barcelona?! With its iconic Gaudí architecture, buzzing neighborhoods, and delicious Catalan cuisine, Barcelona is easily one of the top cities to visit in Spain. I’m still dreaming about the cava, sangria, carne, pesce, churros y chocolate!

From the Gothic Quarter to Park Güell, every neighborhood of Barcelona feels like an adventure. Don’t miss La Sagrada Familia or a relaxing afternoon at Barceloneta Beach. And if you have a few days, take a day trip to Costa Brava for breathtaking coastline views.

Must-See in Barcelona:

  • La Sagrada Familia
  • Park Güell
  • Las Ramblas & the Gothic Quarter
  • Mercado de La Boqueria
  • Tapas and cava in El Born or Gràcia

Marbella – Best for Sun, Sea, and Relaxation

Located on the Costa del Sol, Marbella is a luxurious beach town perfect for a sun-soaked Spanish getaway. I spent a summer living and working here, and it’s one of the most relaxing places I’ve been. It’s a beautiful beach city with kind people and relaxing, sunny, slow vibes.

With charming old town streets, beautiful Mediterranean beaches, and a close drive to Gibraltar, Marbella is a great base for exploring the southern coast.

Highlights in Marbella:

  • Stroll through Marbella’s Old Town
  • Enjoy beach clubs on the Golden Mile
  • Take a day trip to Ronda or Gibraltar
  • Try local Andalusian seafood dishes

Santander – Best for Authentic Northern Spain

Santander, located in Spain’s green and lesser-known north, offers a completely different vibe. I studied here for five weeks and stayed with a host family, which gave me a real taste of traditional Spanish life in Cantabria.

This area is quieter and cooler, perfect for those looking to escape the tourist crowds and dive into local culture.

Things to Do in Santander:

  • Surf at Playa de Somo
  • Explore Palacio de la Magdalena
  • Hike or bike the surrounding countryside
  • Visit nearby Bilbao, Guernica, or run with the bulls in Pamplona

Granada – Best for Moorish Architecture and Artsy Vibes

Granada is one of Spain’s most enchanting cities. With the majestic Alhambra Palace overlooking the city, Granada combines Islamic history, mountain views, and a lively bohemian culture.

I loved wandering into cozy bars for surprise tapas, shopping for handmade mosaics, resting in patios under orange trees, and getting lost in the narrow streets of the Albaicín.

Top Granada Experiences:

  • Visit the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens
  • Explore the Albaicín and Sacromonte neighborhoods
  • Enjoy free tapas with drinks
  • Browse local artisan markets

Sevilla – Best for Flamenco, Plazas, and River Walks

Seville (Sevilla) is one of Spain’s most iconic cities, and though my trip there was short, it left a lasting impression. From the grandeur of Plaza de España to cruising around on bikes, Seville is the perfect place to experience southern Spanish culture.

Things to Do in Sevilla:

  • Visit Plaza de España
  • Explore the Real Alcázar palace
  • Rent bikes and ride along the Guadalquivir River
  • Catch a live flamenco show

Madrid – Best for Museums, Parks, and City Life

No trip to Spain is complete without visiting its capital. Madrid is a vibrant metropolis known for world-class art, walkable neighborhoods, and a deep love of life. I especially enjoyed the Prado Museum, sprawling parks, and spontaneous wine and tapas stops around the city.

Madrid Highlights:

  • Museo del Prado & Reina Sofía
  • Retiro Park & Crystal Palace
  • Tapas in La Latina or Malasaña
  • Royal Palace of Madrid

Bonus: Other Must-See Places in Spain

Beyond the cities listed above, Spain has countless other gems:

  • Valencia – for futuristic architecture and paella
  • Cádiz – a historic coastal town with charm
  • Ibiza & Mallorca – for island vibes, beaches, and parties
  • Ronda – for stunning cliffs and old bridges

Final Thoughts: Why Spain Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List

Spain offers something for everyone, whether you’re chasing beach sunsets, food adventures, cultural experiences, or mountain hikes. The combination of warm hospitality, affordable travel options, and rich regional diversity makes it one of the best countries in the world to explore.

Every time I return, I find something new to love, whether it’s the late-night tapas culture or the simplicity of sipping sangria under the sun.

If you live in New York, Philadelphia, or New Jersey, you’ve likely considered taking a trip to Atlantic City, NJ. And if you’ve ever researched where to stay, chances are you’ve come across Ocean Casino Resort, one of the top-rated luxury resorts in the area.

This five-star resort features three pools, over 15 on-site restaurants, a sprawling casino, and an impressive lineup at Ovation Hall. It’s located right on the beach and connected to the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk, offering something for every type of traveler.

My husband and I escaped to Ocean Casino Resort for a relaxing two-night stay, and it was everything we needed. Here are some of our favorite things to do and tips for making the most of your visit.

Relax and Recharge at the Pools

One of the highlights of our stay was spending time at the pools.

Eclipse Pool

This pool offers both indoor and outdoor sections, with a waterfall feature inside and a pass-through area to easily move between the two. We grabbed chairs outside and enjoyed frozen cocktails under the sun.

Boardwalk Pool (HQ2 Beachclub on Weekends)

Located right on the boardwalk, this adults-only pool is a bit quieter during the day, making it perfect if you’re looking to avoid the crowd or take a break from family-friendly areas. On weekends, it turns into a lively beach club with DJs and events.

Dining at Ocean Casino Resort

There’s no shortage of great food on-site, and we made it a point to try several of the options.

  • Zhen Bang Noodle & Sushi: We had a late dinner here after arriving and loved the sushi, dumplings, and noodle dishes.
  • Harpers: A satisfying breakfast that kept us full well into the afternoon.
  • Ocean Steak: Great for a refined happy hour or date night.
  • Wahlburgers: A great casual pick if you’re in the mood for comfort food. I loved the tater tots!
  • Villain & Saint: We stopped here for breakfast before checking out and lucked out with $5 Bloody Marys on Friday!

Pro Tip: Many restaurants offer daily specials and late-night menus, so check for deals when you arrive.

Enjoy the Beach and Boardwalk

One of the best things about Ocean Casino Resort is the location, just steps from the beach and right on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

We spent time relaxing on the beach, which was clean and calm enough for swimming. Walking the boardwalk is also a must, with plenty of ice cream and snack shops, arcades and boardwalk games, as well as local boutiques and attractions to explore.

Ride the Ferris Wheel at Sunset

The Steel Pier Ferris Wheel was the highlight of our trip. We went at sunset and were rewarded with panoramic views of the ocean and the Atlantic City skyline. It’s a beautiful and romantic way to see the city.

Other Things to Know About Ocean Casino Resort

The Casino: The casino is huge, with rows and rows of slots, lively energy, and plenty of opportunities to get lucky (or just zone out and have fun). Whether you’re a seasoned player or just curious, it’s easy to get swept up in the experience.

Rooms: Our first night was in a smoking room on the 5th floor, but we were able to move to a non-smoking room on the 38th floor the next day. I highly recommend requesting a higher floor for the view. I did miss having in-room coffee or amenities like robes and slippers, which I expected from a five-star stay.

The Atmosphere: The resort feels modern, clean, and upscale. We especially loved sitting by the fire pits at sunset with the ocean as our backdrop.

Final Thoughts: A Relaxing Escape at Ocean Casino Resort

Whether you’re planning a couple’s retreat, a solo escape, or a family vacation, Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City has something for everyone. With luxury amenities, great food, beach access, and endless entertainment, it’s an easy and exciting getaway just a short drive from NYC or Philly.

We’re already planning a return trip. There’s still so much more to try and explore!

9 Fun Things To Do in Oahu, Hawaii

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps support my site. Thank you!

I was lucky enough to spend four months living in Waikiki, Oahu, for a work assignment. Every day in Hawaii felt like a mini vacation. I worked Pacific Standard Time, sometimes from 6 AM to 2 PM local time, and afterward, I’d walk across the street to Waikiki Beach with my surfboard or head to a happy hour for $5 mai tais. Weekends were all about discovering new hikes, secret beaches, scenic drives, and garlic shrimp trucks.

Whether you’re planning a short trip or staying for a while, here are 9 fun and unforgettable things to do in Oahu, Hawaii:

Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area and one of the best places to snorkel in Oahu. The shallow, curved bay is teeming with colorful fish and coral reefs, perfect for beginners and families. Arrive early, as it gets crowded quickly, and be sure to make a reservation online in advance. This spot is close to Sea Life Park, where scenes from 50 First Dates were filmed. Fun fact: the Hawaiian state fish is the humuhumunukunukuapua’a.

Take a Scenic Drive to Oahu’s North Shore

A visit to the laid-back North Shore is a must. Known for its legendary surf spots and charming beach towns, it’s the perfect day trip from Honolulu.

Highlights include:

Don’t forget to stop at one of the famous North Shore garlic shrimp trucks! They’re iconic for a reason!

Tour the Dole Plantation

The Dole Plantation is a fun and family-friendly attraction where you can ride the charming Pineapple Express train, get lost in the world’s largest pineapple maze, and cool off with a refreshing Dole Whip, a pineapple soft serve treat that’s worth the visit all on its own.

Visit Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial

Pearl Harbor is a powerful and emotional place to visit in Oahu. Here you can:

  • Walk across the USS Arizona Memorial and see continuous leaking oil
  • See the site where Japan surrendered in WWII
  • Explore historic battleships and submarines, including the dining and living quarters of the sailors who served
  • Learn about life on board through immersive exhibits

This national historic site is both educational and moving. Plan for at least half a day.

Surf Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is perfect for beginners learning to surf. The waves are gentle and consistent, and there are plenty of surfboard rentals and instructors right along the shore. If you’re a bit more advanced or enjoy longboarding, Queens Beach offers slightly faster waves and a more open lineup just down the beach from the main Waikiki area. You might even spot a sea turtle while waiting for a wave!

Attend a Traditional Hawaiian Luau

No trip to Hawaii is complete without experiencing a luau. These traditional Hawaiian feasts feature a slow-roasted pig cooked in an underground imu, accompanied by live music, fire knife dancing, and vibrant hula performances that share the stories and culture of the islands.

Hike Diamond Head Crater

Diamond Head State Monument is one of the most iconic hikes in Oahu. This relatively easy hike leads to panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean.

Distance: ~1.6 miles round-trip
Time: 1–2 hours
Tip: Go early to beat the heat and the crowds.

If you’re a runner, the loop around the base of the crater is a scenic 5-mile route through Honolulu neighborhoods.

Explore More Hikes Around Oahu

Oahu is a hiker’s paradise. Some of my favorites include:

Relax at Oahu’s Best Beaches

Beyond Waikiki, Oahu is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world:

  • Lanikai Beach: Incredibly beautiful with powdery sand and turquoise waters, ideal for kayaking or relaxing
  • Waimea Bay: Great for swimming in summer, cliff jumping, and wave watching in winter
  • Ko Olina Lagoons: Calm, man-made lagoons near the Disney resort. Perfect for kids or a peaceful swim
